Confluence of material capabilities, institutions and ideas

This section demonstrates the interaction of material, institutional and ideational elements in the realm of the military‒industrial relationship in the context of the US‒Japan alliance, which can be described as the below figure.

Regarding the ideational element, US ideas have influenced Japan’s policymaking regarding the arms industry, and this in turn has further developed ballistic missile defence-related cooperation between the US and Japan. Regarding the institutional aspects of the US‒Japan alliance, it is not only governments but also METI, the Keidanren and Japanese companies involved in the arms industry that have contributed to transforming Japanese policymaking in the face of a changing international environment.
